Security guards outside the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) headquarters in Virginia have opened fire on a woman, calling it a "security incident,” sources familiar with the matter say.

“There was a security incident that law enforcement responded to outside CIA Headquarters,” a CIA spokesperson said on Thursday.

The shooting took place early in the morning on Thursday.

Another CIA spokesperson said earlier that security staff "engaged a person" outside the main gates and then arrested the suspect.

The victim was initially identified as 27-year-old Monia Spadaro, who is said to have approached the front gates of the agency in a car around 4 a.m.

Reports from the sources also indicate that the shooting was nonfatal and that the woman was in stable condition after the incident.

The CIA closed the main gate at its Langley compound and directed employees to seek alternate routes.

The shooting happened hours after two Israeli embassy officials were shot dead in Washington, DC, while leaving an American Jewish Committee event at the Capital Jewish Museum on Wednesday night.
