President Pezeshkian touts Iran, Oman capacity to build strategic connections

Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian (R) and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi attend a meeting with Omani business leaders on May 28 in Oman.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has underscored the geopolitical potential of Iran and Oman to connect regional markets and build strategic links aimed at expanding transregional trade.

Speaking on Wednesday morning during a meeting with Omani business leaders on the second day of his official visit to Muscat, Pezeshkian stated, "We can jointly establish strategic connections with Africa, Russia, Central Asia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey, and Europe, and use the geopolitical capacity of both countries to expand transregional trade."

He emphasized that if the necessary infrastructure and frameworks are established, the volume of economic exchanges between Iran and Oman could reach 20 to 30 billion dollars.

According to Pezeshkian, achieving such a trade volume "requires joint decision-making and mutual belief," which, if realized, "can bring about a major transformation in regional relations."

The Iranian president also stressed the importance of utilizing the potential of the private sectors in both countries to create "investment ties and joint cooperation across various scientific, medical, cultural, security, and economic sectors," to turn it into "a stable regional network."

He added, "The historical relations ... and cultural commonalities of our two nations form a valuable basis for achieving this goal."

Pezeshkian referred to his Tuesday evening meeting with Oman's Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, during which 18 cooperation agreements were signed and added, "The groundwork exists for expanding cooperation between the two countries across all areas, including economic, social, cultural, political, and security-related ones, and we must all seize this opportunity."

He noted that significant agreements had been reached to strengthen bilateral ties. "As a first step," he said, "we must enhance economic and trade relations, as well as industrial cooperation, by linking the two countries through ports and air routes."

Pezeshkian also highlighted the importance of infrastructure development to strengthen land, sea, and air connectivity between Iran and Oman. "Only with such a foundation can we deepen commercial, scientific, industrial, and economic cooperation," he noted.

He further underscored the significance of banking exchanges, adding, "The Governor of the Central Bank of the Islamic Republic of Iran is accompanying this delegation and has held constructive meetings with Omani counterparts, which could facilitate financial and trade transactions."

Reflecting on the longstanding ties between the two nations, he emphasized, "Iran and our brotherly country Oman share warm and deeply rooted ties. These ties are not recent; they date back to several centuries; a history interwoven with sacrifice and dedication that has deepened the cultural, spiritual, and human bonds between our two peoples."

Pezeshkian also called for expanded cooperation between Iran and Oman beyond economic and trade matters, stressing the shared responsibility of both nations to serve the interests of their people and build a better future.

"We can join hands to serve our nations, build a better future for the next generations, and advance scientific and economic development," Pezeshkian said.

He added that areas beyond trade, including science and technology, must also be engaged in serious interaction. "Such cooperation will undoubtedly be beneficial for both countries," he said.

The president went on to emphasize the strategic value of opening up new channels of engagement. "When paths of interaction in scientific, economic, and political fields are opened, peace and security will follow.”

He added, “In places where trade, industry, and science are advancing, war and violence have no place. Through the development of constructive cooperation, we can take steps not only for our own nations but also for regional peace and stability."

Touching on the broader role of Muslim nations, Pezeshkian said, "All Islamic countries share the same faith and are brothers. No Muslim should fall for policies designed to incite conflict and division among Muslims.”

He noted that colonial powers, instead of bringing prosperity, fan the flames of war and bloodshed, plunder resources, attract brightest minds, and in return sell weapons to pit Islamic countries against each other.

In conclusion, he pointed to the shared sense of unity and brotherhood that underpins Iran-Oman ties.

"We must remain vigilant and stand together to promote peace, security, and genuine cooperation among Muslim nations. I hope the understandings reached during this visit will soon yield tangible and constructive results.”

The Iranian president headed to Oman at the head of a political-economic delegation on Tuesday for a two-day visit.
