Iran and China have emphasized the enhancement of cooperation to a strategic level, stressing that their bilateral relations boost regional security.

Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Secretary Ali Akbar Ahmadian on Thursday stressed that “cooperation between Tehran and Beijing can bring security and economic prosperity to the region”, emphasizing the civilizational heritage of both ancient countries.

He made the remarks during a meeting with Secretary of the Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission of the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party, Chen Wenqing, in the Russian capital of Moscow.

“Today’s global security mechanisms are not fair since they are exploited by the West to serve its own interests,” said Ahmadian, stressing the importance of continuous consultations among independent countries to ensure regional security.

The SNSC secretary also touched on the upcoming visit of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to China, noting that the two sides would focus on implementing the existing agreements.

He further emphasized the need to raise the level of trade exchanges to match that of political relations, adding that Iran always keeps its allies informed about the course of its negotiations with other parties.

Chen, for his part, said that Iran is one of the influential countries in the region and that Beijing attaches great importance to its ties with Tehran.

He also warned against hostile plots hatched by enemies aimed at obstructing Iran-China cooperation, noting that the bilateral relations have entered a new phase and that, with the continued efforts of the leaders of the countries, this cooperation will reach the highest level.

Heading the Chinese delegation at the Moscow Security Conference, Chen also expressed hope that Iran and China could develop a joint roadmap for combating terrorism.

The countries signed a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement in 2021, which outlines details of their plan to advance their strategic ties over the following 25 years.

China remains Iran's largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching significant levels despite external pressures.

Both countries have faced illegal and unilateral sanctions imposed by external actors, most notably the United States. Tehran and Beijing deem the bans to be counterproductive, while singling them out for being too weak to meaningfully affect their respective economies.
