Yemen’s pro-Palestinian strikes prompt extension of flight bans to occupied territories

Many major international airlines have extended their flight suspensions to the occupied Palestinian territories amid Yemen’s ongoing aerial blockade against the Israeli regime.

On Tuesday, Air France announced, following months of interruptions, that it sought to delay resuming services to the territories until May 24.

The airline had initially planned to resume service this week, but opted for the additional delay following last-minute reviews.

The Lufthansa Group that gathers Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and Eurowings prolonged suspension of its flights to the territories too.

The suspension would, therefore, last until at least June 8. The coalition had previously set May 26 as the resumption date.

The airline has, meanwhile, been offering free cancellations or rebookings for those affected.

Britain’s EasyJet that groups EasyJet UK, EasyJet Switzerland, and EasyJet Europe, also postponed its return until at least June 30.

The coalition has not flown to the territories since October 2023, when the Israeli regime began the genocide.

Other European carriers have followed suit in extending or canceling their flights.

Aegean Airlines, based in Greece, canceled its planned return at the last minute, with no new return date yet announced.

Other international airlines have likewise effected at least partial changes in their decisions to fly to the territories. Ethiopian Airlines canceled one flight from Addis Ababa to Tel Aviv and its return journey, while Air Canada, which had planned to resume service in June, announced that it would no longer return to the market for the foreseeable future.

Yemen’s Armed Forces announced the blockade on May 4.

As part of either the blockade or previous pro-Palestinian operations, the servicemen have struck the Ben Gurion airport, the regime’s most important air terminal, on multiple occasions with hypersonic ballistic missiles.

The aerial blockade had followed the servicemen’s imposing a naval blockade on Israeli ships or the vessels heading towards the territories.

The forces have vowed to sustain their strikes as long as Tel Aviv kept up the war that has so far claimed the lives of at least 53,573 Palestinians, mostly women and children, across Gaza.

The operations, the troops say, would also continue until the regime ceased a simultaneous heavily intensified blockade that it has been deploying against the coastal sliver.
